Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier is a small toy-breed dog originating in 19th-century Yorkshire, England. Despite their tiny stature, Yorkies are energetic, feisty, and deeply loyal companions. They adapt well to apartment living and are among the most popular toy breeds worldwide, known for their long, silky coats and bold personalities.

Apartment friendly

Excellent apartment dog: small size, moderate exercise needs, and the ability to be paper-trained make the Yorkie an ideal urban companion. Their tendency to bark should be managed with training.

Care

Daily brushing to prevent tangles and matting; bathe every 2–4 weeks with a gentle shampoo; brush teeth daily; two short walks per day (~20 minutes each); use a harness instead of a collar to protect the trachea; professional grooming every 4–6 weeks; regular ear and nail checks

Tracheal collapse, luxating patella, dental/periodontal disease, hypoglycemia, liver shunt, progressive retinal atrophy, urolithiasis

Travel

Yorkies are eligible for in-cabin air travel in a soft carrier under the seat; book the pet spot with the airline in advance. For car travel, use a secured booster seat or soft carrier — not a sling. Feed puppies under 6 months before long trips to prevent hypoglycemia. Bring familiar bedding and toys to reduce anxiety.

Carrier size

Soft-sided carrier approximately 46 × 28 × 28 cm (L × W × H); dog must be able to lie down and turn around inside

Harness size

XS harness; vest-style or H-style harness recommended, with chest plate sitting on the breastbone (not on the trachea); recheck fit monthly as the coat compresses under the webbing

Leash

Lightweight leash 1.2–1.8 m; never attach the leash to a collar due to tracheal collapse risk — always attach to a harness
