Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier is a small but brave and energetic toy breed developed in 19th-century Yorkshire, England. Despite its tiny size, the Yorkie has a big-dog personality: bold, curious, and deeply devoted to its family. The breed adapts exceptionally well to apartment living and is consistently ranked among the most popular breeds worldwide.

Daily brushing of long coat or trimming every 6–8 weeks; daily teeth brushing to prevent dental disease; moderate walks twice daily; needs a sweater or jacket in cold weather due to lack of undercoat

Patellar luxation, tracheal collapse, Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, portacaval (liver) shunt, hypoglycemia, dental disease, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)

Travel

Yorkies typically meet cabin carry-on requirements (combined pet + carrier weight usually under 5–8 kg depending on airline); acclimate the dog to the carrier in advance; watch for signs of hypoglycemia during travel and carry a high-calorie supplement; dress the dog in cold weather

Carrier size

XS or S carrier: internal length approx. 40–45 cm, height approx. 28–30 cm; a soft-sided carrier bag is suitable for most airlines

Harness size

Harness size XXS or XS; typical chest girth 28–38 cm — H-style or vest harness recommended to protect the delicate trachea

Leash

Lightweight leash 1.2–1.5 m or retractable with lock; collar not recommended due to tracheal collapse risk — always attach to a harness
