Siberian Husky

The Siberian Husky is a medium-sized working sled dog with a thick double coat, erect ears, and a friendly temperament, originally bred by the Chukchi people of northeastern Siberia. The breed is known for its remarkable endurance, graceful gait, and outgoing personality. Huskies require substantial daily exercise and mental stimulation; without it, they can become destructive.

Apartment friendly

Siberian Huskies are generally not well-suited to apartment living due to their very high exercise needs, tendency to howl loudly, and risk of destructive behavior without sufficient activity. With a commitment to at least 2 hours of vigorous daily exercise and mental enrichment, apartment life is possible but challenging.

Care

Brush coat 2–3 times a week, daily during shedding seasons. Bathe only as needed to preserve natural coat oils. Provide at least 1–2 hours of vigorous exercise daily. Schedule regular vet visits and annual eye exams. Feed a high-quality, high-protein diet and avoid overfeeding.

Travel

For air travel, the Husky must fly in the cargo hold in a rigid approved crate; check airline pet policies in advance. In the car, use a barrier or a crash-tested harness with a seatbelt adapter. Provide ample water and regular exercise breaks. Guard against overheating in warm climates, as the thick double coat makes the breed heat-sensitive.

Carrier size

The Siberian Husky is a medium breed weighing 16–27 kg and is not suitable for in-cabin air travel. For car or air cargo travel, a rigid airline-approved crate of XL size (approximately 107×71×76 cm for larger individuals) is recommended.

Harness size

Most adult Siberian Huskies fit a size L harness (for dogs 40–60 lbs / 18–27 kg); smaller females may fit a size M. A dual-attachment harness (front and back D-ring) is recommended for better control of this pulling breed.

Leash

A sturdy 1.5–2 m leash with a secure clasp or a bungee/shock-absorbing leash is recommended. Off-leash activity should only occur in a securely fenced area, as Huskies are known escape artists. Retractable leashes are not recommended due to the breed's strong pulling tendency.
