Shetland Sheepdog

The Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie) is an intelligent, loyal, and agile herding breed originating from Scotland's Shetland Islands. Known for its gentle and affectionate temperament, it gets along well with children and other pets, though it can be reserved around strangers. Apartment friendly

Shelties can adapt to apartment living if provided with sufficient daily exercise and mental stimulation. Their tendency to bark frequently should be considered in shared-wall housing. Access to a securely fenced area for off-leash play is a significant advantage.

Care

Brush the coat 2–3 times per week, more frequently during shedding seasons. Provide at least 1 hour of daily exercise and mental stimulation. Brush teeth at least 3 times a week. Schedule regular vet check-ups and genetic screening. Monitor weight to prevent obesity.

Health

Hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA), progressive retinal atrophy, von Willebrand disease, dermatomyositis (Sheltie skin syndrome), epilepsy, gallbladder mucoceles, MDR1 drug sensitivity

Travel

Gradually acclimate the Sheltie to the carrier and car with short trips first. In the car, use a seatbelt harness attachment or a sturdy crate. Plan stops every 2–3 hours for exercise and water. Bring familiar bedding and toys to reduce anxiety. Ensure vaccinations and travel documents are up to date before flying.

Carrier size

For in-cabin air travel, a soft-sided carrier of approximately 48×28×28 cm (L×W×H) is needed. Shelties are borderline for cabin eligibility by size; always confirm the airline's specific dimension and weight limits.

Harness size

Typically size M–L: chest girth 35–53 cm. Choose a soft, adjustable no-pull harness compatible with the Sheltie's thick double coat.

Leash

A 1.5–2 m (5–6 ft) leash for adult daily walks; a 1.2 m (4 ft) leash for puppies in training. Use a metal clip. Retractable leashes may be used in safe, open areas for well-trained dogs only.
