Jack Russell Terrier
The Jack Russell Terrier is a small, sturdy, and exceptionally energetic British breed developed in the 19th century by Reverend John Russell for fox hunting. The breed is known for its bold, independent, and lively character, high intelligence, and boundless energy. Despite its compact size, it requires significant daily exercise, consistent training, and an active owner.

Apartment friendly
Not ideal for apartment living: the breed is very high-energy, prone to barking, and needs ample space to run. Apartment living is possible only if the owner commits to multiple long daily walks and intensive mental stimulation, and if neighbors can tolerate barking.
Care
Requires at least 1–2 hours of vigorous daily exercise (walks, running, playtime in a securely fenced area). Early socialization and consistent training are essential. Weekly brushing; rough-coated dogs may need professional hand-stripping 1–2 times per year. Bathe no more than once every 4–6 weeks to avoid dry skin. Daily teeth brushing recommended. Regular vet check-ups and weight monitoring. Must be kept in a securely fenced yard — prone to escaping and digging.
Health
Patellar luxation, Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, primary lens luxation (PLL), cataracts, glaucoma, atopic dermatitis, deafness, epilepsy, Cushing's disease (hyperadrenocorticism), bladder/kidney stones, dental/periodontal disease, portosystemic shunt (PSS), obesity

Travel
Acclimate the dog to the carrier well in advance, gradually increasing time spent inside. Provide vigorous exercise before a flight to reduce excitability. Jack Russells tend to bark, which can disturb fellow passengers — consult your vet about calming options if needed. Always carry vaccination records, an ID tag, and a favorite toy. For car travel, use a crash-tested harness or a secured crate.
Carrier size
Soft-sided carrier approximately 45–48 cm long × 28–30 cm wide × 28–30 cm tall (internal dimensions); suitable for in-cabin airline travel for dogs up to 6–8 kg. Always confirm requirements with your specific airline.
Harness size
Typically size S or M; chest girth usually 35–50 cm. A front-clip or Y/H-shaped no-pull harness is recommended to manage this high-energy dog. Always measure chest girth before purchasing.
Leash
A sturdy fixed-length leash of 1.2–1.8 m (nylon or leather) is recommended. Retractable leashes are not advised due to the breed's strong prey drive and tendency to bolt. Use a fixed leash at all times in unfamiliar environments.
