Great Dane
The Great Dane is one of the world's tallest dog breeds, often called the 'Apollo of dogs.' Despite their imposing size, they are known for a gentle, friendly, and affectionate temperament, earning the nickname 'gentle giant.' The breed originated in Germany, where it was historically used for boar hunting and as a guardian dog by the nobility.

Apartment friendly
Not ideal for apartment living due to their giant size, but can adapt if given sufficient daily exercise and outdoor time. Requires a spacious home without cramped spaces; a securely fenced yard with a fence at least 6 feet (180 cm) tall is preferable.
Care
Feed 2–3 smaller meals per day and avoid vigorous exercise around mealtimes to reduce bloat risk. Weekly brushing is sufficient; more frequent during shedding season. Moderate daily exercise of 30–60 minutes; avoid intensive running or jumping in puppies under 18–24 months to protect developing joints. Schedule regular vet check-ups including annual cardiac screening. Early obedience training and socialization are essential given the breed's size.
Health
Gastric dilatation-volvulus (bloat/GDV), dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), hip dysplasia, Wobbler syndrome (cervical spondylomyelopathy), osteosarcoma (bone cancer), hypothyroidism, Addison's disease, degenerative myelopathy

Short, smooth
Travel
Car travel is far more practical than flying due to the breed's size; use a spacious giant-breed crate or a crash-tested car harness with a seatbelt attachment. Plan stops every 2–3 hours for walks and hydration. Air travel is only possible as checked cargo (never in-cabin); always confirm the airline's large-breed policy well in advance. Bring familiar bedding and toys to reduce travel anxiety. Avoid large meals before travel to lower the risk of bloat (GDV).
Carrier size
Requires a giant/XXL hard-sided airline-approved crate for cargo transport — large enough for the dog to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. In-cabin carrier transport is not possible due to the breed's size.
Harness size
Size XL or XXL; a heavy-duty harness with a padded chest plate and adjustable straps designed for giant breeds is recommended
Leash
A sturdy 1.2–1.8 m (4–6 ft) nylon or leather leash; retractable leashes are not recommended given the breed's strength and size. A leash with a bungee/shock absorber is advisable to reduce strain on the handler.
Airline cabin travel
usually not
