East European Shepherd
The East European Shepherd (VEO) is a large working breed developed in the Soviet Union from the 1920s to 1950s, selectively bred from German Shepherds to create a larger, cold-resistant dog for military, police, and border patrol duties. It is known for its balanced temperament, high intelligence, unwavering loyalty to its family, and wariness toward strangers. Significantly larger than its German Shepherd ancestor, it remains one of the most numerous breeds in Russia and former Soviet countries.

Hip and elbow dysplasia, gastric dilatation-volvulus (bloat), glaucoma, degenerative disc disease, ectropion and entropion

Travel
VEOs tolerate confined spaces poorly for long periods; for car travel use a spacious crate or cargo barrier; air travel is only possible as checked cargo in an IATA-approved hard crate; feed at least 3–4 hours before travel to reduce bloat risk; bring water, a familiar blanket, and acclimatize the dog to the crate well in advance
Carrier size
Due to its very large size, the VEO does not fit in standard carriers; transport requires a large airline-approved crate for checked baggage/cargo (XL/XXL size)
Harness size
Harness size XL or XXL; a sturdy nylon or leather harness with wide straps rated for dogs 45–60 kg is recommended
Leash
A sturdy 1.5–2 m nylon or leather leash; a short fixed leash is recommended for urban walks; retractable leashes are not recommended due to the breed's strength
