Central Asian Shepherd Dog

The Central Asian Shepherd Dog (Alabai) is one of the world's oldest breeds, shaped over more than 5,000 years through natural selection across the harsh terrain of Central Asia. A large, powerful, and independent livestock guardian, it was traditionally used to protect flocks and property from predators such as wolves and bears. The breed is fearless, self-assured, and deeply loyal to its family, but requires an experienced owner, early socialization, and ample space.

Care

Weekly brushing (daily during heavy shedding seasons); bathing every 1–2 months; daily walks and exercise; feed high-quality large-breed dog food twice a day; avoid vigorous exercise around mealtimes to reduce bloat risk; early socialization and consistent training are essential; regular vet checkups; routine nail trimming and dental care

Travel

The Central Asian Shepherd is not suitable for cabin travel on any airline. Air transport must be in the cargo hold in an approved XXL crate. In vehicles, a large secured crate or dedicated cargo space is required. The breed may not tolerate long trips without prior acclimation; train early for crate and vehicle travel. Provide water and frequent breaks during long road journeys.

Carrier size

No standard carrier is suitable — the breed is far too large for any portable pet carrier or bag. An airline-approved XXL cargo crate is required for transport.

Harness size

XXL harness with reinforced straps and metal hardware; a no-pull harness with front and back attachment rings is recommended for better control of this powerful breed

Leash

Heavy-duty 1.2–1.8 m (4–6 ft) nylon or leather leash with a metal clasp; retractable leashes are not recommended. The dog should be kept on-leash in public areas due to strong territorial instincts.

Airline cabin travel

usually not
