Cane Corso

The Cane Corso is a large Italian mastiff breed descending from the war dogs of ancient Rome, historically used as a guard dog, cattle herder, and large-game hunter. It is characterized by a powerful, muscular build, a broad head, and a short double coat that comes in black, gray, fawn, red, and brindle. The breed is deeply loyal to its family, reserved with strangers, and best suited to experienced owners who can provide firm, consistent training and early socialization.

Apartment friendly

Not recommended for apartment living. The breed thrives best in a house with a large, securely fenced yard. If kept in an apartment, very long daily exercise sessions are mandatory, and owners must account for the dog's large size and tendency toward separation anxiety.

Care

Weekly brushing with a rubber grooming mitt or soft-bristle brush; bathe every 6–8 weeks or as needed. Provide at least 1–2 hours of daily exercise (walks, jogging, fetch). Early socialization and positive-reinforcement training are essential. Schedule regular vet check-ups, maintain dental hygiene, and trim nails routinely. Monitor weight carefully, as obesity puts extra strain on joints.

Health

Hip and elbow dysplasia, gastric dilatation-volvulus (bloat), idiopathic epilepsy, entropion and ectropion (eyelid abnormalities), cherry eye (nictitans gland prolapse), demodectic mange, hypothyroidism, dilated cardiomyopathy

Travel

The Cane Corso tolerates being alone poorly and can be stressed by changes in environment. For car travel, use a sturdy crate or a certified vehicle divider. Air travel is only possible as checked cargo following airline regulations. Crate-train the dog well in advance of any trip. Always bring water, familiar toys, and have an emergency vet plan ready at the destination.

Carrier size

The Cane Corso is a large breed and cannot fit in standard pet carriers. Transport requires a large crate (e.g., XXL size, approximately 122×76×84 cm). Cabin travel on airlines is not possible for this breed.

Harness size

Harness size XL or XXL (chest girth typically 80–110 cm). A heavy-duty H-style or Y-style harness with reinforced hardware designed for large, powerful dogs is recommended.

Leash

A sturdy 1.2–1.8 m (4–6 ft) nylon, biothane, or leather leash with a heavy-duty metal clasp. A leash with a bungee shock absorber can be beneficial for strong pullers. Retractable leashes are not recommended for safety reasons.
