Apartment friendly
Possible with sufficient daily exercise (at least 1–1.5 hours of walks). Shiba Inus can adapt to apartment living if given adequate physical and mental stimulation, but their independent nature requires consistent training and boundaries.
Care
Brush coat 1–2 times per week, daily during heavy shedding seasons (spring and fall) using a deshedding tool. Bathe every 6–8 weeks. Brush teeth daily with dog-safe toothpaste. Clean ears regularly and trim nails as needed.
Health
Allergies (skin and food), hip dysplasia, glaucoma, anxiety and separation anxiety, dental and periodontal disease
Coat
Double coat: stiff straight outer coat with a soft dense undercoat
Travel
Gradually acclimate the dog to the carrier and car with short trips before longer travel. Ensure vaccinations are up to date and schedule a vet check before a long journey. Plan regular stops for exercise and bathroom breaks. Bring familiar toys and bedding to reduce stress.
Carrier size
A carrier approximately 55–60 cm long, 35–40 cm wide, and 35–40 cm tall (internal dimensions) is required. Most Shiba Inus exceed typical in-cabin weight/size limits and must travel as checked baggage.
Harness size
A no-pull, escape-proof harness with adjustable straps, size M, is recommended. Shiba Inus are known escape artists, so a secure fit is essential.
Leash
A sturdy 1.5–2 m standard leash or a locking retractable leash for walks. A long line (5–10 m) is useful for outdoor exercise; off-leash only in securely fenced areas due to high prey drive.
