American Eskimo Dog
The American Eskimo Dog is a compact, highly intelligent, and energetic spitz-type breed developed in the United States from German Spitz ancestry. It comes in three sizes — toy, miniature, and standard — all sharing the same hallmark white double coat, erect triangular ears, and plumed tail curled over the back. Eskies are exceptionally trainable and devoted companions, but require ample physical and mental stimulation to prevent excessive barking and nuisance behaviours.

Apartment friendly
Suitable for apartment living provided the dog receives daily vigorous exercise and mental stimulation. The breed's tendency to bark can be an issue with neighbours, making early training and socialisation essential. Toy and miniature sizes adapt better to apartments than the standard variety.
Care
Brush the coat 2–3 times a week, more frequently during heavy shedding seasons (spring and fall). Bathe no more than once every 6–8 weeks to preserve natural skin oils; never shave the double coat. Provide 45–60 minutes of daily exercise plus mental stimulation. Monitor food portions carefully to prevent obesity.
Health
Hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), patellar luxation, juvenile cataracts, epilepsy, diabetes, Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, skin allergies
Coat
Dense double coat with a thick undercoat and straight, longer outer guard hairs without curl or wave; always white or white with biscuit/cream markings
Travel
Toy-size Eskies within airline weight limits (~4–5 kg including carrier) are typically eligible for cabin travel; confirm with your airline before booking. Crate-train early to reduce travel anxiety. In cars, use a secured crate or a crash-tested dog seatbelt harness. Bring water, a favourite toy, and a familiar-scented item. Eskies are prone to separation anxiety, so gradual acclimatisation to travel is recommended.
Carrier size
Toy-size Eskies (up to ~4.5 kg) fit standard cabin-size soft carriers; miniature and standard sizes require a larger floor kennel. Internal length should allow the dog to stand and turn around comfortably.
Harness size
Toy size: XS/S harness; miniature: S/M; standard: M. An H-style or Y-front no-pull harness is recommended to avoid tracheal pressure.
Leash
A standard 1.2–1.8 m (4–6 ft) nylon or leather leash is recommended. Retractable leashes are not advised given the breed's high energy and chase instinct. A long 5–10 m training lead is useful for recall practice.
