Cairn Terrier

The Cairn Terrier is one of Scotland's oldest working terrier breeds, named after the stone cairns in the Scottish Highlands where they hunted foxes and vermin. They are spirited, bold, and cheerful companion dogs with a harsh shaggy coat and alert pricked ears. The breed is widely recognized for playing Toto in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz.

Travel

Cairn Terriers adapt well to travel with proper preparation. Acclimate them to the carrier in advance. Dogs under 8 kg are typically accepted in aircraft cabins. Bring a familiar toy and fresh water. On road trips, plan regular stops for exercise and toilet breaks.

Carrier size

A small-to-medium carrier with internal dimensions of approximately 50–55 cm length and 35–40 cm height is recommended, allowing the dog to stand, turn around, and lie down. A soft-sided cabin carrier is suitable for travel.

Harness size

Typically size XS or S (varies by brand); a harness with adjustable chest and belly straps suited for terrier builds with a deep chest is recommended.

Leash

A standard 1.5–2 m nylon or leather leash is recommended. Use retractable leashes with caution, as Cairn Terriers have a strong prey drive and may bolt after small animals.
