German Spitz Mittel (Mittelspitz)

The German Spitz Mittel (Mittelspitz) is a compact, lively and loyal breed featuring a distinctive fox-like face, a thick ruff around the neck, and a bushy tail curled over the back. Intelligent and always alert, they make excellent companions and watchdogs. The breed adapts well to apartment living but has a strong tendency to bark, making early socialization and training essential.

Care

Brush the coat 2–3 times per week, daily during shedding season. Bathe as needed. Clean teeth and ears regularly. Trim nails monthly. Never shave the coat completely as it disrupts natural insulation.

Health

Patellar luxation, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), retinal dysplasia, collapsing trachea, dental problems

Coat

Double coat: long harsh straight outer coat and thick soft woolly undercoat

Travel

For air travel, the dog typically travels in the cargo hold due to its size. For train and car trips, a carrier or crash-tested car harness is recommended. Bring familiar water, food, and a comfort toy. Plan regular breaks for exercise and toilet needs.

Carrier size

Carrier size M: internal length approx. 55–60 cm, height approx. 40–45 cm. The dog must be able to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably.

Harness size

Typically size S or M depending on chest girth (usually 40–55 cm). A soft harness with wide straps that do not compress the thick coat is recommended.

Leash

A 1.5–2 m nylon or leather leash. A standard fixed-length leash is ideal for urban walks; retractable leashes may be used only in safe areas away from traffic.
