Toy Poodle

The Toy Poodle is the smallest FCI-recognised variety of the Poodle, standing up to 28 cm tall and weighing 1.8–3 kg. It is highly intelligent, affectionate, and devoted, excelling in training and adapting well to apartment living. Its low-shedding curly coat makes it a popular choice for allergy-sensitive owners.

Apartment friendly

Excellent for apartment living: small size, moderate exercise needs, and minimal shedding make the Toy Poodle an ideal urban companion. Daily walks and mental stimulation (training, puzzle toys) are important to keep the dog happy and well-behaved indoors.

Care

Requires professional grooming every 6–8 weeks and daily brushing to prevent matting. Regular ear cleaning and dental care are essential. Needs moderate daily exercise—walks and play sessions. Thrives on close human companionship and may develop separation anxiety if left alone frequently.

Progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, patellar luxation, epilepsy, von Willebrand disease, Addison's disease, Cushing's syndrome, Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, otitis (ear infections), dental and gum disease

Travel

The Toy Poodle travels well due to its compact size and typically qualifies for in-cabin travel on most airlines (always verify current carrier rules). Bring familiar toys and treats to reduce stress. Avoid feeding a large meal before travel. For long journeys, plan short breaks outside the carrier when possible.

Carrier size

An XS–S soft-sided carrier is suitable (cabin size): internal dimensions approx. 40 × 25 × 25 cm, allowing the dog to stand and turn around comfortably. Soft carriers of this size are typically accepted in-cabin by airlines.

Harness size

Typically fits an XS or S harness. A soft vest-style harness is recommended to distribute pressure evenly and protect the breed's delicate bone structure.

Leash

A lightweight 1.2–1.5 m leash or a retractable leash (up to 3 m) is recommended for park walks. A collar alone is not advised due to the breed's fragile neck vertebrae; always use with a harness.
