Hani Walk

Chinese Shar-Pei

The Chinese Shar-Pei is an ancient breed from China, instantly recognizable by its deeply wrinkled skin, broad hippopotamus-like muzzle, and blue-black tongue. These dogs are independent, loyal, and deeply devoted to their families, while remaining naturally wary of strangers. They are calm, low-energy companions best suited to experienced, patient owners.

Apartment friendly

Yes. The Shar-Pei adapts well to apartment living due to its low energy level and calm temperament. Daily walks and moderate physical activity are still required to keep the dog healthy.

Care

Clean skin folds regularly with a dry cloth to prevent irritation and infection. Clean ears weekly due to narrow ear canals. Bathe as needed, thoroughly drying all folds afterwards. Brush with a soft bristle brush or rubber grooming mitt weekly. Avoid prolonged exercise in heat, as the breed is prone to overheating.

Health

Entropion (in-turned eyelids), otitis externa, Shar-Pei fever (swollen hock syndrome), skin fold dermatitis, corneal ulcers, hip dysplasia

Coat

Short, harsh, and bristly coat (horse coat or brush coat variety)

Travel

Shar-Peis are heat-sensitive — schedule travel during cooler parts of the day. Acclimate the dog to its crate and car from an early age. Always carry fresh water and avoid leaving the dog in a hot, unventilated vehicle. For air travel, cargo hold transport is required; check airline policies well in advance.

Carrier size

The Shar-Pei is a medium breed (16–29 kg) and is not eligible for in-cabin air travel. For car or rail travel, use a hard-sided or soft-sided crate of size L or XL.

Harness size

Typically size L harness; choose a wide, padded harness with soft edges to avoid irritating skin folds around the chest and neck.

Leash

A 1.5–2 m nylon or leather leash at least 2 cm wide. A retractable leash up to 5 m can be used in safe open areas for training. A harness is preferable to a collar due to the breed's heavy neck folds.
