American Eskimo Dog

The American Eskimo Dog is an intelligent, energetic, and devoted breed descended from European Spitz-type dogs, and comes in three sizes: toy, miniature, and standard. It is known for its brilliant white double coat, lively temperament, and eagerness to please. While affectionate with family, Eskies can be wary of strangers and have a strong tendency to bark.

Apartment friendly

Conditionally suitable: toy and miniature Eskies can adapt to apartment life if given sufficient daily exercise and mental enrichment. However, their strong tendency to bark may disturb neighbors. Regular walks and stimulation are essential.

Care

Brush coat 2–3 times weekly (daily during shedding seasons); bathe every few months; provide daily exercise and mental stimulation; monitor weight as the breed is prone to obesity; brush teeth and clean ears regularly

Health

Hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), patellar luxation (toy/miniature), epilepsy, juvenile cataracts, diabetes

Coat

Double coat: dense undercoat and long stand-off outer coat; always white or white with biscuit cream

Travel

Toy Eskies weighing up to 4–5 kg may fly in-cabin in an approved carrier; always confirm airline rules in advance. Miniature and standard sizes must travel as checked cargo. In cars, use a secured crate or dog seat belt. Bring water, familiar food, and a favorite toy to reduce anxiety. Crate-train your dog well before travel.

Carrier size

For toy size (up to 4.5 kg): soft-sided carrier or hard crate with internal dimensions approximately 46 × 28 × 28 cm. Miniature and standard sizes typically exceed airline cabin weight limits and require cargo travel.

Harness size

Toy size: XS/S; miniature: S/M; standard: M. A step-in or H-style harness with adjustable chest girth is recommended, as the breed is active and can slip collars.

Leash

1.5–2 m nylon or leather leash for everyday walks; a retractable leash up to 5 m can be used in open areas. A short, controlled leash is recommended in public due to the breed's wariness of strangers and barking tendency.
