Border Collie

The Border Collie is a British herding breed originating along the Anglo-Scottish border approximately 300 years ago and is widely considered one of the most intelligent dog breeds in the world. It is an energetic, athletic, medium-sized dog with an exceptional work ethic that requires substantial daily physical exercise and mental stimulation. Without adequate activity the breed can become destructive, making it best suited to experienced, active owners.

Apartment friendly

Not well-suited to apartment living. Border Collies need ample space, extended daily exercise, and room to run. In small homes without sufficient physical and mental stimulation they are prone to destructive behaviour, excessive barking, and anxiety.

Care

Brush the coat 2–3 times a week; daily brushing with a de-shedding tool is needed during spring and autumn coat blows. Bathe approximately every 3 months using dog-formulated shampoo. Trim nails regularly, clean ears, and brush teeth. Provide at least 1.5–2 hours of vigorous physical exercise daily plus mental stimulation through training, puzzle toys, and agility. Schedule regular vet check-ups to screen for hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and eye conditions.

Health

Hip and elbow dysplasia, Idiopathic epilepsy, Collie eye anomaly (CEA), Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), Trapped neutrophil syndrome (TNS), Hypothyroidism, Border Collie collapse (exercise-induced), Malignant hyperthermia

Travel

Accustom the dog to crates and car travel from an early age. Use a crash-tested car harness or secured crate during road trips. On long journeys, stop every 2 hours for exercise and water. Due to the breed's tendency toward separation anxiety, bring familiar items (toys, bedding) and avoid leaving the dog alone for extended periods.

Carrier size

The Border Collie is a medium-sized breed that typically exceeds standard in-cabin carrier dimensions (up to ~45–48 cm length). Air travel usually requires cargo transport in an airline-approved hard crate. Always verify the specific airline's pet policy.

Harness size

Typically fits a size M or L harness (depending on sex and build), with chest girth usually 55–75 cm. A front-clip (anti-pull) harness is recommended to manage leash pulling.

Leash

A sturdy 1.5–2 m nylon or biothane leash is recommended for daily walks; a long line (10–15 m) is useful for recall training and free-range exercise. Retractable leashes are not recommended due to the breed's high energy and pulling tendency.
