Care

Brush coat 2–3 times per week, daily during shedding seasons. Bathe every 4–8 weeks. Check and clean ears regularly. Feed only after exercise to reduce bloat risk. Requires about 1–1.5 hours of daily exercise. Sensitive to heat — provide shade and fresh water; avoid strenuous exercise in hot weather.

Travel

Bernese Mountain Dogs must travel in the cargo hold of aircraft or in a spacious crate in a vehicle. They are heat-sensitive — avoid travel during hot weather. Stop every 2 hours on road trips for exercise and water. Crate-train the dog well in advance of travel. Consult a veterinarian before long trips.

Carrier size

Due to their large size, Bernese Mountain Dogs do not fit in standard carriers. An XXL-sized transport crate is required for travel.

Harness size

XL or XXL harness with wide padding and durable hardware. A no-pull harness with both front and back attachment rings is recommended to manage the breed's strong pulling instinct. Ballistic nylon or full-grain leather are preferred materials.

Leash

Sturdy 1.2–1.8 m (4–6 ft) nylon or leather leash with reinforced hardware. Retractable leashes are not recommended due to the breed's powerful pulling force and large size.
