Basenji
The Basenji is an ancient hunting breed originating in Central Africa, famously known as the 'barkless dog' because its unusually shaped larynx produces a distinctive yodel-like sound instead of a bark. The breed has an independent, intelligent, and cat-like temperament — it self-grooms meticulously and produces virtually no 'doggy' odour. Basenjis are highly energetic and curious dogs that require daily vigorous exercise and an experienced, patient owner.

Apartment friendly
Suitable for apartment living provided the dog receives daily vigorous exercise and mental enrichment. The breed is compact, virtually bark-free, and odourless — all positives for urban living. However, without adequate activity it is prone to destructive behaviours such as chewing and digging.
Care
Brush the coat once a week with a soft bristle brush or grooming glove. Bathe only when necessary — Basenjis self-groom like cats. Trim nails regularly, clean ears and teeth routinely. Provide vigorous daily exercise and mental stimulation. Perform annual urine strip tests to screen for Fanconi syndrome.
Health
Fanconi syndrome (hereditary kidney disorder), progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), immunoproliferative small intestinal disease (IPSID), hypothyroidism, hip dysplasia, luxating patella, hemolytic anemia, umbilical hernias
Coat
Short, smooth, fine, close-lying coat
Travel
Crate-train well in advance and feed the dog in the carrier before travel. Give a thorough run before departure to tire the dog out. For air cargo travel, use an IATA-approved rigid crate; attach food to the outside and include your itinerary and contact details. Keep the dog hydrated; on long road trips take regular potty breaks. International travel requires additional documentation (health certificates, vaccination records).
Carrier size
Medium (M) sized carrier: internal length approx. 55 cm, height approx. 35 cm. The breed typically exceeds most airlines' in-cabin weight/size limits; verify with your specific carrier before travel.
Harness size
Size S–M; a secure escape-proof harness with an extra rear strap (e.g. Ruffwear Web Master style) is strongly recommended, as Basenjis are adept escape artists. Fit by chest girth, typically 45–65 cm.
Leash
A sturdy 1.5–1.8 m leash for walks; never let a Basenji off-leash in unsecured areas due to a strong prey drive. A long-line (5–10 m) can be used for sporting activities; free running only in a securely fenced area.
