Australian Shepherd
The Australian Shepherd is a medium-sized, athletic herding breed developed in the United States during the 19th century. Known for their high intelligence, loyalty, and boundless energy, Aussies retain a strong herding instinct even as companion dogs. They excel as service, search-and-rescue, and therapy dogs, as well as in dog sports such as agility.

Apartment friendly
The Australian Shepherd is best suited to homes with a yard, but can adapt to apartment living if provided with extensive daily exercise and mental stimulation. Without sufficient activity, the breed is prone to destructive behavior, excessive barking, and anxiety. Not recommended for sedentary owners or very small apartments.
Care
Brush coat 2–3 times per week (daily during shedding seasons) using a slicker brush and undercoat rake. Bathe every 1–2 months. Do not shave the coat — the double layer protects against heat and cold. Check ears regularly, trim nails every 2–3 weeks, and maintain dental hygiene. Provide high levels of daily physical and mental exercise: walks, agility, fetch, and training games.
Health
Hip and elbow dysplasia, hereditary cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, iris coloboma, collie eye anomaly, multidrug resistance (MDR1 gene mutation), epilepsy, hypothyroidism, hemangiosarcoma, anxiety disorders

Travel
Australian Shepherds are too large for in-cabin air travel. For flights, use an IATA-approved cargo kennel. In cars, use a crash-tested dog seatbelt or travel crate. Bring sufficient water and make stops every 2 hours. Provide mental stimulation during long trips (chew toys, treat puzzles). Ensure all required health documentation and vaccinations are up to date for travel.
Carrier size
The Australian Shepherd is a medium-sized breed and does not fit in standard in-cabin pet carriers; use a car crate or checked/cargo airline kennel for travel.
Harness size
A durable, adjustable harness in size M or L (varies by brand) is recommended. Prefer a harness with both front and back leash attachment points for better control of herding tendencies. Always size by measuring the dog's chest girth.
Leash
A sturdy 1.8–2 m (6-foot) nylon or biothane leash is recommended. Use a shorter leash in crowded areas or near small animals to control herding instincts. Retractable leashes are not advised due to the breed's strong drive to chase and herd.
